Remembering
Art Young
"Seeing Art
Young was always one
my favorite parts of
meetings of the
Board of Assistants
of the New York
Mayflower
Society. Art
served for many
years as both the
Elder of the New
York State Society
and the Elder of the
Society's Albany
Colony. Art was
always an active
participant in our
State Society
meetings, bringing
his wise perspective
to our various
deliberations. His
dedication to the
Society's mission of
maintaining the
memory and values of
the Pilgrims was
perhaps best shown
by the fact that he
faithfully attended
meetings of the
State Society in New
York City, taking
the train down from
Albany to New York
in the morning and
then, after the
meeting, hastening
to the station to
get the train
home. Art made
this journey for
every meeting even
when he had reached
an advanced age and
travel had become
challenging for
him. Toward the
end of his tenure as
Elder, I often found
myself helping Art
out to the street to
catch a taxi back to
Penn Station for his
journey
home. My last
glimpse of Art was
probably of him
thanking me as he
slipped into the
back of a
cab. He was a
wonderful man,
exemplifying the
faithfulness,
hardiness and
intrepidity of the
Pilgrims. He
will be deeply
missed, and fondly
remembered."
Stephen
Madsen, Governor
Emeritus
The Society
extends our
condolences to his
wife Anne and to all
of those whose lives
he touched.
Sincerely,
Justin
Abelow
Governor,
on behalf of the
Board of Assistants
